Evaluation

Evaluating mock interview, training drama evaluation, formal letter evaluation, telephone call evaluation, C.V., online bio evaluation and conclusion.

Interview training video evaluation

As part of Unit 11 we had to learn about how to conduct ourselves during an interview. Therefore to show our understanding of what we learnt we created an interview training video. My role was script writer, and I also played the perfect and average candidate while Molly in our group played the bad candidate (the slob) and Karla played the interviewer. We wanted our video to achieve one main objective which was to inform our audience, how to conduct yourself in an interview, and also show them how not to.

I have come to the conclusion that I think our video achieved what we set out for it to achieve. In fact we asked for some feedback and they found the bad interview candidate amusing because of the their bad habits such as putting feet on the desk which shows that the video achieved its aim of how not to performing an interview. Furthermore, my performance as the perfect decapitate gained compliments from our audience including how I looked smart, well spoken and prepared - thus showing that are viewers realise how to conduct yourself in an interview. I believe the success of our video was down to our careful and thorough planning of each of the characters - this has taught me that although it takes time, careful planning really pays off. One of our feedback comments included "The acting is also superb, it made fell as though each scenario realistic and believable, plus I Found it really informative."

The project was also very efficient - we only hired out 1 camera, 1 tripod and 1 external microphone which made the set up process very quick. This also allowed us more time to film as we did quite a few takes. Although we used very little equipment our video was still informative and we found from the feedback mentioned above.

That being said we also had some negative feedback which included how the music choices were bizarre, and dirt really fit the piece. Furthermore one of the pieces of feedback was that the average candidate should have been in the middle of the video instead of being last (e.g. bad first, average 2nd  and best last). I was told that this would show the gradual improvement of each interview.

Now that I have the feedback and the experience of making the video I believe I know how to make it   better if I was to do this again in the future. First of all I would ensure that once we had planned the video that we got feedback of the plan and asked the audience how we could improve it. This would therefore mean we could film and edit the video knowing the audience feedback in mind and make any changes necessary. By adopting this method I would also solve the issue of the audience not liking the music as I could ask them what music would suit the video the best.

CV evaluation

I also created a CV in this unit as I wanted to showcase my qualifications, skills and talents. I created this using Canva.com which gives you many creative and colour templates to work with. By creating a colourful and creative CV it will help it stand out from the rest when I am applying for jobs. I created different sections to it such as work experience, personal profile and academic background.

Overall I am happy with my CV and believe I achieved what I set out to achieve. In fact I asked my father for feedback and he said he really liked the structure, the colours and even said that it clearly gets across my skills and abilities. This was really valuable feedback as he often checks CV's in the media industry at work when he is looking at new recruits.

By creating a colourful, creative CV like this it has given me a new understanding, that CV's can be presented in many different ways, it doesn't just have to be black and white text on a sheet of a paper like they usually are. This therefore has certainly improved my confidence of making new CV's in the future using this website.

In the future I will experiment with different designs and templates using the Canva website, as I believe it will be good to change how it looks, now and then again.

Online Bio/ Personal statement evaluation

Creating my online bio and personal statement was something that I found quite challenging. The aim of these were to show of my skills and abilities, and in particular, the personal statement was to show how I my skills were linked to the journalism courses I wanted to study at University. It was important that I kept these short and concise for example the personal statement had a character limit of 4000. This is a very small amount of characters to try and show off your passion, skills, interests and achievements.

I am happy with my personal statement in particular as I have now received offers from every university course I have applied for (5 in total) including 2 unconditional offers which I believe was partly down to my high quality personal statement. Creating this statement has taught me many skills such as learning how to compress information to only the most important and engaging points - something which will be really useful in creating journalistic pieces - a career I want to get into.

In the future I now feel much more confident in creating personal bio's and personals statement as I have developed my skill in compressing lots of information. In the future I am going to ensure that I update my personal statement/online bio as I learn new skills so if I apply for a new job that will be up to date with all my skills and abilities.

Formal letter evaluation

It was really beneficial to create a formal letter, as it is something that will really be useful in the future. I learnt that formal letters are very important when applying for a job, as they allow you to get across your passion for the job you are applying for and that a well written one can give a really good initial impression to the employer. By writing this letter my aim was to help me improve my skill of my wiring style. My formal writing style is something that I struggle with - so by doing this, this has really helped me improve this.

By writing this letter, it has taught me that writing in a formal manner is a skill that takes a while to get used to and good at. However now that I have created this letter I can now refer back to it when I am writing future ones.

Like I have said by writing this letter this will really help me in the future, when I need to write other ones. I am going to ensure that in the future, when I see a job that I really like - I am going to ensure when I apply I write a formal letter - to give the employer a good first impression.

Showreel

In this project I also created a showreel to show off some of my best work - especially work that demonstrates my journalistic skills - such as interviewing in my documentary, radio show podcast and multi-camera news broadcast. I also showed off one of my articles that I have published in my local newspaper (Lynn News). The aim for this was to show of my skills for when I went to my university interviews for Journalism  at Salford, UEA and London Southbank.

Overall I am really happy with how my edited showreel. It is 2 minutes which means its not excessively long and gets across some of my skills and best work. Furthermore it had a really positive impact on at the university interviews - as when I showed it off they all said they were really impressed b the broad range of skills that are shown. For example one of them said they are really impressed that I have been able to present a show in a studio environment (referring to my multi-camera news broadcast and that I conduct myself professionally in the news interview. Furthermore it was also impactful because 2 of the universities (Salford and Southbank) offered me unconditional offers and UEA offered me a conditional (Merit) offer.

Creating a showreel also made me aware of the broader issues when applying for a job. I learnt its vitally important that when you apply for a job for example to have more than just a CV - if you have a combination of different works e.g. showreel, CV and formal letter it really makes a positive impression to your potential future employer.

To conclude I am really happy with how my showreel went - and am going to ensure that I keep updating it in the future as I produce more work.

Research evaluation

Overall I am happy with my research for this project. The aim of my research was to help give me an idea of the job that I wanted to get into and it has certainly has informed me of what I would like to do with my life. For example I knew that I liked news, and current affairs so I did research into the role and day to day tasks of a journalist - and I thought that sounds something I would love to do with my life.

I also set Smart Targets to give my progression project structure - for example I set a target of creating a showreel that demonstrated journalistic practices such as my interview technique in my documentaries, multi-news broadcast and radio show broadcast. This was a very relevant aim to achieve, as I showed my showreel to my university open days at the University of Salford, Southbank University and they said they were really impressed. Furthermore I have since received two unconditional offers for these universities so this was a very effective task to set myself.

My extensive research looked into the pay and conditions of journalists and I even looked into very specific type of journalism which was war and current affairs journalism. Before this project I had never thought of this, but after my research this is something I am really interested in.

By thinking of and creating interview questions that are relevant to what I want to pursue, this has made me feel prepared for future interviews that I will face when applying for jobs in the journalism industry. Although at times I struggled with answering interview questions I have definitely improved my confidence and feel more ready than ever before to tackle any difficulties I may face.

Now that I have learnt all of this from now on and in the future I will ensure that I carry on my research into the journalism industry and the code and conventions journalists have to follow as this will further my understanding of the industry.

Telephone skills evaluation

Another activity that I carried out was practicing a mock professional telephone call. The aim of this was to practice how to carry out a phone call in a professional. For example I pretended that I was working at a restaurant: Rathskeller in Kings Lynn and that someone phoned up to book a table. I therefore had to respond in a professional manner. We learnt that you should have a positive tone with clear enunciation. Also to be sincere use the customers name when responding and leaving the customer satisfied are important elements to a professional phone call.

Overall I am happy with how the phone call went however there are defiantly areas that I could improve. At times I stuttered and used lots are um's - which made me seem less confident and therefore unprofessional. Also I forgot to use the customers name when I was speaking to her (Molly) which made me sound less friendly.

I have learnt that to improve in the future I am going to ensure I carrying on practicing mock phone calls to improve my telephone communication skills so when I do have to have a professional one I am prepared and ready.

Mock interview reflection.

Overall I think my interview went well. The aim for carrying this out was to improve how I perform when I am attending an interview for a university or job place.

I used the S.T.A.R. method to answer my question which ensured my answer was clear and precise. However one of the pieces of feedback that I got was I didn't make my answer that relevant to team work - instead mostly communication skills. I believe that my interview was really relevant as one of my aims for this project was to improve my interview technique and by learning techniques such as the S.T.A.R. method - this has certainly improved my ability to perform well at an interview.

To ensure that I do this next time I will ensure that I mention how I addressed the group as a whole (when giving a team work example) instead of mentioning how I briefed each member of the production crew individually.

Ideas evaluation

The ideas part of this project was really beneficial to me. It help gave structure to the whole project and also helped my create a plan of what I was going to do to ensure that I achieve my aims. For example we created a SWOT analysis which helped us analyse our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

This method of analysis in my opinion was really effective because it made me think about my strengths and weaknesses etc and what impact these would have on my chosen career path- broadcast journalism. For example I looked at how one of my skills is high quality research and how that allows me to produce high quality content - something really important journalism. Also I looked at how I also have many opportunities to get myself into my chosen career path for example through my father who works at the BBC and knows many contacts the media industry. On the other hand I reflected on how journalism is a very saturated market - which makes it harder to have a successful career in this path furthermore many of the jobs are in London - which is very expensive to live.

This task was in fact very relevant-it allowed me to address some of the issues that I may face when applying for a job in my chosen career field. This is exactly what I wanted this task to achieve -and I am going to ensure that in the future I apply this to other aspects of my professional life such as when I am coming up with ideas for journalism projects in university.

Finally I also learnt the importance of well-being - especially your mental health during this project. For example I learnt that a way that I can boost my wellbeing is by changing my usual routine up a bit to make it different e.g. travel a different route to college, try new foods and even learn a new language. In fact I have set myself a target to learn French and exercise outside instead of exercising indoors which is what I usually do. Well-being is very relevant to me as one of my goals is to improve my mental health.

Self-evaluation

Overall I am happy with how this project has went. I believe I have developed a lot as a person by carrying out this unit. For example this project has had a big impact on me as I know more about the career that I want to go into and have analysed the risks and other things such as my strengths and weaknesses that may affect my career path. Through using techniques such as S.T.A.R. to answer interview questions, I feel more confident to be in a interview environment.

Learning how to improve my well-being has also been really beneficial to me and will alow me to contunue to develop as a person.
